Our team provides consulting, engineering, and technical services in the areas of:
The GBS Group brings the skills and passion necessary to dig deeper into the root causes of engineering, maintenance, and process problems and undesirable events. We do not believe it is worthwhile to simply identify failures and implement quick fixes or “needle moving” solutions. Real progress requires sincere analysis, genuine respect for facts and reality, and an understanding of how to get to the source of problems. We understand the physical issues affecting equipment, the impact of human dynamics, and the process factors that underlie expensive and unexpected failures to critical systems and components. Our work with the mechanical staff at a major passenger rail company offers many examples of how our approach to overall reliability will bring you tangible results and cost savings.
Our team works hard to understand your business and your bottom-line performance drivers. We deliver solutions that are relevant to your most pressing problems especially those problems that others cannot seem to solve. We embrace such challenges. Contact us today and find out what a difference passion and experience can make. Reliability Centered Maintenance and Condition Monitoring–
The GBS Group specializes in Reliability Engineering using such tools as Reliability Centered Maintenance (RCM) and Condition-Based Monitoring (CBM). We apply these techniques in our work with the US Navy, the US Coast Guard and in the rail transportation industry.
Our RCM methodology helps owners, operators, maintenance managers and regulators to carefully move from a time-based to condition based maintenance program for high value equipment while building in enhancements to reliability and safety. The GBS Group is currently engaged as a subcontractor to The McHenry Management Group of Chesapeake, VA, supporting a national passenger rail operator with the implementation of an RCM program throughout the company’s rolling stock. The RCM program is designed to comply with the Federal Railroad Administration guidelines as outlined in Title 49 of the Code of Federal Regulations. This RCM project is the first in the rail operator’s history and have brought major improvements in asset reliability and availability, including - 35% reduction in planned maintenance requirements
- Planned maintenance periods reduced from 9 to 4 days.
Root Cause Analysis –The GBS Group has achieved impressive results for our customers through disciplined application of proven Root Cause Analysis (RCA) processes and standards. RCA is predicated on the belief that problems are best solved by correcting or eliminating root causes, as opposed to merely addressing the immediately obvious symptoms. Our engineers and analysts provide expert support and training services to assist clients with identifying root causes for troubled systems, machinery, and components that reduce system availability and reliability.
RCA work by GBS engineers at a national passenger rail operator have reaped big rewards and resulted in fundamental and positive changes for the client: - Average door-related delays reduced by 52%
- Average tilt-related delays reduced by 31%
- HVAC-related delays reduced by more than 30%
- Nearly $2M cost savings from RCA on HHP-8 power module
- Increased asset availability - Uptime
- Maintenance and material savings
- Design and software changes to address flaws
- Improved training
Maintenance Analysis and Procedure Development – The GBS Group provides expert maintenance engineering analysis in accordance with industry-standard RCM principles and concepts, focusing on Preventive Maintenance (PM) program scheduling, optimization, and knowledge delivery from the executive ranks to shop floor level. Our engineers and analysts help our clients assess their total maintenance ”universe“ so they understand the ”as is“ maintenance effects on all their systems and equipments. We then facilitate a very rigorous approach to understanding relevant failure histories of systems and equipment and we help clients develop and accomplished an effective maintenance program. We understand how to calculate and monitor system reliability and we help clients assure the maximum reliability possible at optimum cost. RCM programs are often cited for failing to produce the desired results or for exaggerating their results. Both of these assertions are true in our experience. The GBS Group, however, takes no shortcuts and we do not oversell RCM – we deliver it as it should be delivered which means it is done safely and with technical integrity. We understand reliability engineering and employ only experts with extensive backgrounds in mechanical, electrical, aerospace and other engineering disciplines to ensure that we safely and intelligently help our customers to learn and implement RCM the right way. Our engineers have extensive field service engineering experience combined with academic understanding. We know how to get dirty and we know how to help your people to embrace RCM in a manner that will get you results. For more information about this or related projects contact The GBS Group today.
Equipment Health Monitoring– The GBS Group has experience in designing, developing, installing, troubleshooting, aligning, and performance monitoring of software and hardware systems. One such example is our Maintenance Events Analysis Program, known as MEAP™. This system provides a comprehensive, end-to-end solution for critical fault extraction and wireless data transfer for remote monitoring of locomotives. The system resulted from a year-long study of root causes of rolling stock equipment failures and is being driven by the engineers and management of the nation’s largest passenger rail operator with GBS engineering support. This system will first be implemented in the company’s electric locomotives and trainsets. Contact The GBS Group for additional details and learn about other examples of our results-oriented consulting projects.
U.S. Navy Aircraft Carrier Support –
The GBS Group works closely with Naval Surface Warfare Center and COMNAVAIRFORCE to maintain Total Ship Information Management System (TSIMS) datasets for U.S. Navy aircraft carriers. TSIMS provides situational awareness to the combat systems department onboard aircraft carriers. GBS employees and teaming partners redline the space and system drawings to reflect new installations in C5I spaces on aircraft carriers. Redlines and workups for as many as 165 spaces per ship are developed in AutoCAD and then converted into the Navy’s TSIMS system. GBS employees bring essential skills to support the TSIMS program including experience with ISEA / SSA programs, RMMCO approvals, training development, database administration, software utility development, AutoCAD experience, shipboard systems experience, integrated logistics management, and project management. The skills honed by GBS in the support of TSIMS and U.S. Navy aircraft carriers are applicable for other ships and applications and have been used to support other U.S. Navy programs.
Submarine Information Systems – The GBS Group works closely with NSWCCD-SSES to update and maintain the Submarine Maintenance Monitoring Information System (SMMIS). SMMIS is the suite of software applications used by Submarine Performance Monitoring Teams (PMT) and NAVSEA engineers to record and analyze submarine maintenance data. The GBS Group provides software support for the full life-cycle of SMMIS. GBS employees help develop requirements, write software code, perform testing, and maintain quality assurance documents in accordance with CMMi Level 3 processes. The skills and experience GBS employees develop by supporting SMMIS program continue to be of value to the submarine community as well as offering value for other Navy programs.
Environmental Engineering – The GBS Group holds two SeaPort-e prime contracts providing environmental engineering expertise and support to the US Navy. The GBS team assist NAVSEA’s Environmental Management and Policy Division in developing Navy/DoD standard operating procedures and environmental guidance documents for the Naval Warfare Centers; in benchmarking, measuring, and reporting ESOH program performance; in conducting formal audits/evaluations and monitoring implementation of EMS of NAVSEA facilities; and in developing/reviewing range assessment documents and reports to determine compliance with environmental laws, regulations and Navy/DoD policy.
GBS environmental engineers also supports NAVSEA, Fleet and other Navy/DoD Agencies and their overall environmental and hazardous materials programs – including ship design, engineering, safety, and supply chain management under a third SeaPort-e award. The GBS team assists the Naval Surface Warfare Center, Carderock Division, Ship Systems Engineering Station’s (NSWCCD-SSES) Hazardous Material and Environmental Pollution Control System Department with engineering, scientific, programmatic and Fleet operational expertise in the development and design of various technical systems and requirements.
